Portrayed are the single-bit or poll axe, and the double-bit axe often associated with lumberjacks. Although both tools were used for felling and limbing, the single-bit was safer. A good woodsman with a double-bitted axe always kept one edge razor sharp and nick-free, and used the other for rougher work.
