1825: In the Way of the Log Drives

As part of river improvements, log drivers clear trees from 10-foot (3 metre) wide swaths along the shoreline to create runways for their work. Decades later when the log drives end, much of this space is colonized by quick-growing poplar, which gives an energy boost to generations of bank beavers for years to come.
