1700: Beaver Fever

Fur traders promote a massive harvest of beaver. Algonquins may have brought pelts downriver for decades before a local trading outpost was set up at Golden Lake. In 150 years, the beaver will be driven to the brink of extinction - saved only by the growing popularity of silk (instead of felt) for hats.
