R. When a river driver drowned, where was he buried?
H. He was buried right there. The Madawaska River was the worst river you ever seen in your life, the Madawaska. And the crosses there, you couldn’t set a tent for crosses; the crosses on there at the Wolf. The falls there, they called it the Wolf Falls on the Madawaska. And where that falls is, there, you couldn’t set a tent for crosses, graveyards. All graveyards all over the place. You’d think you were at Vimy Ridge. You see a picture of Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele. Well, I seen the picture. I have three brothers there, Johnny didn’t die there. Johnny died after he came back home. He died at Whitney. But Jesus Christ, the crosses. They were made out of cedar, you see. Last a long time. Cedar lasts a long time. That’s the best wood to last for years and years is cedar. Because all them crosses where they buried them. And if you take a bible with you, when you go on the river drive, there’s one man — that would be the Clerk — he’s going to have a bible. Probably a bible — and a Catholic bible. No matter what religion you belonged to, you’d be buried by that religion. But whoever is a good speaker, he’s the one that’s going to read it out.But never got no minister or a priest to read at your grave. You read out of the bible, dust to dust and so on. And you’re buried and you’re forgotten. Maybe next year you’re going to bury some more there. Oh, yeah, you couldn’t bring them out.
